Marine GIS Intern

Company/
Organization:
National Marine Policy Agency
Location: Monterey, CA
Pay Rate: $500 stipend upon completition of project
Description: We are charged with evaluating the nation’s marine protected areas and providing guidance based on sound-science toward the creation of a national system of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). In order to evaluate the current set of MPAs we needs to establish GIS datasets of MPA and maritime zone boundaries. The main responsibility of the GIS Intern would be creating boundaries that could not be acquired from outside resources. Boundary creation could include digitizing from nautical charts, generating polygons from a set of points or spatial interpretation of a boundary description. Other responsibilities, include processing boundaries acquired from other agencies (combining datasets, checking locations and clipping a marine area). Full FGDC compliant metadata will need to be completed. Knowledge of scale, projections, datums and accuracy issues surrounding the datasets is important. The ability to use both raster and vector GIS techniques will be helpful.
