I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) (www.imsg.com) is looking for highly motivated individuals to join our team efforts to support NOAA/NESDIS/Center for Satellite Applications Research (STAR). IMSG supports STAR in applied science research and development efforts in a semi-research and semi-operational working environment along with U.S. government scientists, visiting scientists, and other contractors. IMSG is currently seeking to hire a Physical Scientist with surface vegetation products background to work at the NOAA/NESDIS STAR office in Camp Springs, MD to support NOAA/NESDIS in sustaining production of the real-time weekly global Green Vegetation Fraction (GVF) product from future polar-orbiting satellites at current or better spatial and temporal resolution, the resolution of the GVF data needs to keep pace with the NWP/land model development, which is currently being tested at 4km resolution and will be operational in the coming years).
Ideal candidates possess advanced degrees in physical sciences, remote sensing, astronomy, physics, mathematics, and computer science, etc., and/or have sophisticated programming skills in IDL/Matlab, C/C++ or FORTRAN. Experience in relevant fields is generally required. Fresh graduate students are strongly encouraged to apply. Exceptional candidates with BS degrees will be considered. Candidates qualifications are more important than the timeline to fill these positions.
Duties:
Develop an enhanced Global Vegetation Processing System (GVPS) for weekly global GVF data from VIIRS at 4-km resolution, based on 1) sufficient continuity with the current AVHRR-based GVPS (that produces GVF at 0.144-degree resolution), and 2) necessary improvements in various sensor and atmospheric corrections that are needed to meet user requirements.
Testing and evaluation of various input VIIRS data products for GVF generation, and development of a validation capability.
Generation of proxy VIIRS GVF datasets
Evaluation of GVF data and algorithm selection
Develop GVPS system and deliver to NESDIS operational agency.
Prepare materials and additional documents for demonstrations and reviews at different development stages required by the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) process, such as Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, Software Code Review, etc. |

Requirements:
PhD (preferable) in geosciences, hydrometeorology, physics, remote sensing or a related field; MS with extraordinary experience will be considered
Extensive experiences/knowledge on land surface vegetation from remote sensing
Strong programming skills using Java, FORTRAN90, C, C++, and IDL
Experience with HDF-4/5, GRIB/GRIB2, and NetCDF data formats
Experience with Landsat/ETM+ or other comparable satellite imagery
Understanding of the retrieval of NDVI and GVF from AVHRR and MODIS data
Peer-reviewed publication on relevant subjects
Self-motivated; good communication skills
Green Card or U.S. citizenship preferable |
