Description: Summary of Job: This individual will work within the UNAVCO Facility Engineering Group to provide technical support to National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Projects.

Essential Job Functions:
• Repair geophysical research equipment and related ancillary equipment.
• Accurately maintain databases used for equipment and project tracking.
• Develop manufacturing, testing, evaluation, and QC procedures for geophysical equipment.
• Participate as a member of a team to test and evaluate new geophysical equipment, power systems, and communication equipment.
• Oversee design, fabrication, integration, testing, documentation and repair of hardware and software.
• Produce drawings and documentation related to the development, manufacturing and testing of geophysical instrumentation.
• Inventory and inspect geophysical and ancillary equipment upon receipt at UNAVCO.
• Operate under general supervision and may provide technical assistance to lower level technicians.
• Maintain the Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) equipment pool; including inventorying and assembling the instrumentation for deployment.
• Perform fieldwork as necessary.
• Other duties may be assigned as necessary for the successful operation of the business.

Requirements: Required:
• Basic knowledge of GPS methodologies and instrumentation. Good understanding of the architecture and function of geophysical instrumentation.
• Ability to solve complex electrical and mechanical problems.
• High standards of quality control and attention to detail.
• Advanced skills in the operation of hand and machine tools.
• Familiarity with Windows, Linux/UNIX, Mac OS's, TCP/IP, serial protocols, scripting, Word, and Excel.
• Basic level knowledge of a programming language and ability to write and troubleshoot scripts for remote data communications and interfacing with geophysical instrumentation.
• Good oral and written communications skills in English.
• Ability and willingness to travel domestically or internationally.
• Valid passport and driver’s license and a UNAVCO-insurable driving record.

Desired:
• Experience working in remote environments.
• Advanced training certifications.

Required Education and Experience:
• Associates degree from a technical institute.
• Minimum of five years of job related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and climb.
• Ability to grasp objects, and reach above shoulders.
• Ability to see small electronic components.

Mental Requirements:
• Must be able to count, add, subtract, multiply, divide and to record, balance and check results for accuracy. Must be able to compute, analyze and interpret numerical data for report purposes. Must be able to compose detailed reports and work-related manuals. Must be able to make decisions which have significant impact on UNAVCO’s credibility operations and services. Must be able to understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions.
