Maritime Studies

College or University: Williams College and Mystic Seaport

Type of degree: B.S.

Brief overview of program: Maritime Studies is an interdisciplinary program that examines the literature, history, policy issues, and science of the sea. Each semester, every student must also learn a traditional maritime skill, including shipsmithing, celestial navigation, demonstration squad, boat building, shanty singing, or boat handling. Students can be of any major and have represented over 100 different colleges and universities since 1977. All share, however, a deep respect for the world's oceans.

Number of students enrolled in 2007: 21

For the students that enter the workforce, what are the most common occupations that they pursue with this degree or certificate? Our alumni often enter professional fields closely related to their studies at Williams-Mystic. Some of these fields include: fisheries management; government positions; admiralty lawyers; watershed planners and ecologists; professors of marine ecology and development; museum directors; ship's crew; military careers; writers, to name only a few.

Description of Facilities: Opening in Fall 2007 will be our new Carlton Marine Science Center. The CMSC supports student research projects in the field, which can then be recreated in the wet and dry labs indoors. The building itself was constructed with green elements in mind; solar pannels will be key in the conservation of energy throughout the year. Students live in five historic homes within walking distance of Mystic Seaport - their campus for the semester. With 24-hour access to the seaport and its collection of over 5,000,000 items, individual research projects often lend themselves to senior theses and grad school applications after the completion of the semester. While they are not on campus, students participate in three field seminars throughout the United States: one offshore on the SSV CORWITH CRAMER (where deep sea tows are completed), a second to the Pacific Coast, and a third to the Mississippi Delta to examine the Gulf of Mexico.

Program Faculty: Our faculty come directly from Williams College, where many of them are at the head of their departments.

Student Support: Financial concerns should never prevent any student from participating in Williams-Mystic. Most college's financial aid packages will transfer, including college, state, and federal grants and loans. Williams-Mystic financial aid and scholarships are also available. The Benjamin W. Labaree Scholarship Endowment provides merit scholarships each semester to students with an outstanding academic record. Williams-Mystic also awards several small grants each semester, made possible by gifts from alumni, parents and friends to the Williams-Mystic Annual Fund.
