Brief overview of program: The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia invites applicants for graduate study in Ph.D. and M. Sc. programs. We are an interdisciplinary department of biological, chemical, and physical oceanography, with special emphasis on coastal and estuarine processes. Research interests of the faculty includes broad thematic areas from marine ecology, global and regional carbon and nutrient cycling, the ecology, physiology, and genomics of marine microorganisms, coastal physical oceanography, ocean acoustics, to remote sensing. Our research sites spans the globe, from the high-latitudes to the equator, and often includes computational or modeling components. Potential students are strongly encouraged to contact individual professors and the graduate coordinator. A recruitment event will be held in early February when we can support your visit to the UGA campus.
Qualified candidates may be nominated for the University Presidential Award or other Graduate School Assistantships. In the absence of a University level Assistantship, accepted students are supported by either a Teaching or Research Assistantship. All graduate assistantships include a tuition waiver. The university and the department also provide students with travel funds for attending scientific conferences. Athens is a great place to live with a relatively low cost of living and a vibrant social scene.
