Marine Sciences

College or University: University of Georgia

Type of degree: M.S.

Brief overview of program: The M.S. program has two tracks, a traditional research track designed to prepare the student for further graduate training at the doctoral level, and an applied marine studies track, designed as a terminal and/or in-service degree for students whose career goals are management and policy positions with government or industry. The M.S. requires a minimum of 30 hours of graduate-level credit, of which 9 must consist of core courses in Biological Oceanography (MARS8010), Chemical Oceanography (MARS8020), and Physical Oceanography (8030). Additional graduate courses from Marine Sciences and other departments are available to complete each student's program. Students on either track will conduct an independent research project and submit and defend a thesis.

Student Support: Research Assistantships Research Assistantships (RAs) are awarded by individual faculty from grant funds. Prospective students should contact faculty representing their areas of interest to inquire about the availability of RAs. Selection of RAs is carried out by each individual faculty member. Teaching Assistantships Teaching Assistantships (TAs) are awarded by the departmental Graduate Affairs Committee. Each year, up to 7 teaching assistantships will be available to new and continuing students. Teaching assignments will be either for Department of Marine Sciences courses or Biological Sciences Division courses. In either case, the usual assignment involves teaching laboratory sections in undergraduate courses. University-Wide Assistantships University-Wide Assistantships are awarded to incoming students in a competition based on GRE scores, letters of recommendation, grades, and other measures of scholarship. Each award is for 21 months, after which students are eligible for TA and RA support. Outstanding candidates can be nominated for a Presidential Graduate Fellowship, which provides support at $20,000 per year for 5 years.
