Aquatics Biology

College or University: Southwest Texas State University

Type of degree: Ph.D.

Brief overview of program: With an emphasis on original research, the doctoral program is designed to provide depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of Aquatic Resources and related disciplines, including basic and applied research, management, and policy aspects. Students will be educated in the application of this research and knowledge, both independently, and with other specialists, in a multidisciplinary environment to identify and solve complex problems and issues relevant to the sustainable use of aquatic resources. The doctoral curriculum stresses active roles for students in intellectual exchange with both faculty and peers and in the critique of published research. The program also aims to facilitate the entry of its students into the professional community of scholars in a manner emphasizing the completion, presentation, and publication of original, creative research, as well as direct them toward positions of intellectual leadership in their personal and professional lives. Doctoral study presupposes the previous acquisition of sufficient knowledge obtained at the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree level, and a command of skills and techniques needed to conduct intensive independent research and investigation.
