Marine Biology

College or University: University of Maine

Type of degree: Ph.D.

Brief overview of program: Summary of Program: It is the intention of this degree program to provide the student with a broad knowledge base in marine biology, including but not restricted to emphases in taxonomy/systematics, comparative morphology, evolution, genetics, physiology, cell and molecular biology, and ecology. Due to the wide variety of curricular possibilities that can be pursued by the student, there are three course requirements: one semester of biological oceanography, to set the environmental background, one semester of statistics at the graduate level, and one semester of seminar (currently SMS 691).

Program Faculty: Membership of the marine biology faculty is open to any graduate faculty member in the School of Marine Sciences with an interest and expertise in any aspect of marine biology. These faculty will select a Program Committee that will be responsible for general oversight of the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Marine Biology at the University of Maine. Duties of the Marine Biology Program Committee will include: (1) curricular development, (2) decisions to admit faculty outside of SMS (e.g., non SMS faculty, people on soft-money appointments, scientists from other institutions, etc.), (3) nomination of the Program Coordinator, (4) approving exceptions or alternative courses similar in content to those offered at the University of Maine (e.g., deciding if a graduate or undergraduate course taken at another institution can be used to waive a University of Maine course requirement), (5) approving any exceptions to the program guidelines (e.g., students who may need to take the qualifying exams later because of cruise schedules, etc.), and (6) dealing with any other general needs of the degree program. Selection of the Program Committee must be by vote of at least a quorum of the Program Faculty. A quorum, for the purposes of all items in this document, is 2/3 of the Program Faculty.
