Comments on this program: In addition to our master's degree, you can also earn a Masters Degree while pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard license as Third Mate of Steam and Motor vessels. To qualify for the license, you must complete all undergraduate courses within the Deck Licensing Department. The Third Mate license will entitle you to work onboard all U.S. flag vessels, including cargo, passenger and other merchant vessels as a ship's deck officer. The Third Mate/M.S. Degree Program is a unique post baccalaureate educational opportunity. It was created for those students who already possess a four-year degree and who, in addition to pursuing a graduate degree, desire to work as a licensed ship's officer. To be in this program you must meet requirements established by the U.S. Coast Guard. If you do not meet these requirements by reason of citizenship or health, you may still register in all of the prescribed courses but will not be eligible to receive the Third Mate license. In order to be granted a Third Mate License in the U.S. you must be a United States citizen, however, it may be possible to present proof of eligibility for the license, except citizenship, to the licensing authority of other nations and be awarded a license in that country. You must check with the appropriate licensing authority in your country to verify their specific requirements. Students pursuing the Third Mate License are eligible for many types of financial assistance unique to the license program such as the MMR program and the Navy and Marine Corps ROTC program. Due to Federal requirements these financial incentives are available only to U.S. citizens. The License program is a challenging, yet rewarding program that will allow a student to prepare for a career at sea or ashore in a management role. Students in this program will take undergraduate license courses during the day and graduate classes at night. Graduate License students are required to wear uniforms to their undergraduate license classes during the day and have the option of living on or off campus. These students are part of the Regiment of Cadets and as such are subject to specific requirements as set forth in the regimental rules and regulations. Some of the regimental requirements however are modified for Graduate License students who are considered to be "students in special status". In addition to the academic portion of the license program and the Master's Degree curriculum these students will participate in three "Summer Sea Terms" during which they will gain practical experience in the operation and maintenance of the college training vessel "Empire State VI". Ports of call for the 2002 sea term included: New Orleans, Louisiana; Bergen, Norway; Freeport, Bahamas; Dublin, Ireland.
